About the Position

The Head of Engineering is a senior software development role in the company, reporting directly to the General Manager of the business unit. He/she will own and have complete responsibility for all software development, DevOps, cloud operations and quality assurance as it pertains the software product offerings. As a member of the executive leadership team, the Head of Engineering will also play a key role in enterprise business strategy development and bring a working knowledge and future vision of leveraging technology and data in business model design.

Job Requirements and Responsibilities

1 - Leadership

  • Play a key role in contributing to overall business strategy.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the General Manager, other key executives, and the CEO regarding software development and technology operations.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership and business partners to define and execute the software business strategy.

2 - Product development

  • Lead the architecture, implementation, deployment and management at scale of all software products.
  • Drive the adoption and utilization of Agile and other contemporary software development approaches. Maximize the velocity of product iterations. Build functional delivery strategies that optimize business value through small incremental production deployments.
  • Assure product quality consistently meets or exceeds customer expectations.
  • Get cross-organisation buy-in on delivery schedules. Effectively communicate product development plans and status throughout all levels of the company.

3 - Team

  • Recruit, manage, lead, and scale the product development organisation.
  • Create and deliver programs for employee skill development, career development, resource planning, and performance evaluation.
  • Support and foster the energy and morale of the group and create a continuous improvement culture to get the most out of the development team.

4 - Infrastructure, processes, systems

  • Implement metrics, monitoring, and processes to assess system and infrastructure performance.
  • Continually assess and upgrade processes for product quality, risk management, high availability, performance, and user experience.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for the design, development, operation and support of development and production systems and programs, including application management, security and risk management, and infrastructure and operations support management.

5 – Innovation

  • Maintain currency on new technologies and platforms and provide direction on emerging technologies to be assimilated, integrated and introduced within the enterprise.
  • Lead the establishment and execution of a digital workplace strategy that ensures employees have the tools and work environment to be more engaged, productive and effective.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will have executive-level product development experience in a rapidly-growing tech company with responsibility for a team of 10+ developers. Strong candidates will have experience building and managing a distributed development team. Proven success with a variety of agile methodologies and a strong sense of how and when to apply is required. Also required is a consistent track record of developing and executing on aggressive but realistic product roadmaps. Candidates with experience as an individual contributor in software development who have risen up through the leadership ranks are preferred. Experience with big data and analytics is preferred but not required.

Personal Profile

The Head of Engineering will be ready to “roll up his/her sleeves” and bring a hands-on player/coach perspective to product development. He/she will define success in terms of results and will have a strong sense of urgency and bias for action. The best candidates will be able to balance assertiveness with collaboration, and possess a strong sense of process, discipline, and attention to detail. Importantly, this individual will have the interpersonal, leadership, and collaboration skills needed to drive development decisions across the organisation.

Compensation

A competitive compensation package will include a base salary, incentive plan, benefits, and equity participation.
